I hit the wall today. The wall of complacency, that is. I worked somewhat later than usual, getting back to the hotel after an adventurous taxi ride at about 6:30 PM or so. I just didn't have the energy to go out in search of something decent to eat and then end up at a crummy rendition of an american fast food chain. So I ate at the hotel. I read the New York Times while eating dinner and then got back to my room at about 9:15 or so.
Looked at my e-mails from work. Tried to connect with an engineer at GM North America with no luck, and getting very tired.
Didn't take a single photo today.
Going to bed now.

So, did you go on this trip alone? I'm so sorry if you did. I'm impressed Scott, with how much you are getting out and trying to experience the culture. When I was in Beijing I hooked up with the missionaries there...what was their name???? Ah...no wait that was in Hong Kong, oh I can't remember...but they were from the Free Methodist church. They had a son that was kind of naughty who went to Spring Arbor. He has to be about your age. Anyways I saw him this year at Covenant Hills. He is married now (to a Chinese lady) and they adopted a little girl from China. He pastors a FM church up north I guess. I'm just wondering if there are any there that could offer you some kind of tour of the city etc. Hey...make sure you bring that sweatshirt home. I'd love to see it on you! I love you...hang in there! You've almost been there a week. And seriously...when do you work? Do you work a full day at a GM place?Love you,
heidi
Hey, scott! You truly get the LAKE family adventure award for 2007. It's the inaugural year for the award because I just made it up.:) I can't fathom being alone in a city where no one speaks my language- you are a trooper!
Your food adventures are quite stellar- can't wait to sample some of those chicken bones. I am praying for your safety as well as for your spirits- keep up the happy thoughts:)
I know Heidi is referring to the evoys in her posting. They have been stateside for a few years.
Maybe you would find some fm missionaries, though. Have you looked at the fm website?
Your pics are awesome. Can't wait to see the slideshow!!
Love you
Lisa
o.k. o.k.....if I don't post I look like the crappy sister. Here is the deal: just what I said before. stick with the chinese equivalent of 7-11 with wierd flavors of Lays potato chips. I myself ate lays potato chips at around 11:30 this morning for breakfast/lunch/early dinner. They held me until about 5:50 this evening. Seriously....you can go along way on fat and potatoes...trust me, I know. Anyway, the pictures of the city look so different..so clean. Were those old people doing tai chi serious? How does one become one with the universe in the middle of Shanghai? Anyway, I thought as well that you were traveling with others. That really stinks. Well, it is almost tuesday and you have only one week left...you are half way there. Love you so much and am praying for you.

oh by the way it was steve evoy that was naughty...but he is easily confused with eric church....however, eric was a naughty AFRICAN missionary kid...just wanted to clear that up.

Scott, it's your retarded brother-in-law. (yes, Matt) I sense guilt in this post. Am I right? Is there guilt over not eating Shanghai Surprise? Please cut yourself some slack. There are alot of things i don't know, like how to work words like "stellar" and "inaugural" into a working sentence, but i do know that Jesus doesn't care if you didn't "take pichah" today.
I also know that if i were in Shanghai for two weeks, alone, the main thing I would have on my list of things to do, would be to get a ride in one of those reverse wheel barrow thingies pulled by the 95 year old dude with black teeth and a wok lid on his head. That's the only picture you should feel guilty for not getting.
Ka-da-tay mean empty hand,
Matt
